GLP-1 Nutrition Guide: What to Eat While on Ozempic or Wegovy

GLP-1 receptor agonists — the medication class behind Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro — work partly by slowing down how fast food leaves your stomach. This is a major reason they’re effective for weight management, but it also means the way you eat needs to adapt.

Because digestion is slower, large or heavy meals are more likely to cause nausea and discomfort. Smaller, more frequent meals tend to sit better than three large ones.

Protein deserves special attention. Appetite reduction often means people eat less overall, and protein is the easiest nutrient to under-eat when portions shrink — which can accelerate muscle loss during weight loss. Aiming for a protein source at every meal (eggs, fish, poultry, legumes, dairy) helps protect lean mass.

Fiber and hydration matter more too. Slower gut motility combined with lower food intake commonly leads to constipation. Vegetables, whole grains and consistent water intake help offset this.

Finally, fatty and very sugary foods tend to worsen nausea on these medications, so many people find lighter, simpler meals easier to tolerate, especially in the first few weeks of a new dose.
